There is absolutely nothing else like this in the world. Dozens of tombs dating back to around 5th-4th centuries BC were discovered to contain amazingly beautiful frescoes on the interior walls of the tombs.

The tombs themselves are sealed off and kept in temperature and humidity controlled environment so we have the unique opportunity to admire these ancient masterpieces for a long time.  A push button turns on the light on a timer, you may turn on the light repeatedly to enjoy viewing the tombs as long as you wish.

Aside from the frescoes, the tombs are bare. All the sarcophagi and treasures are housed in the town of Tarquinia nearby inside the Tarquinia National Museum

From Tarquinia, you will enjoy a scenic drive to Tuscania. 

Not to be confused with Tuscany, Tuscania was also formerly an important Etruscan city with many legends contributing to the origins of its name: one being it was named after Tusco, son of mythological Hercules and Araxes. 

Another legend has it Tuscania was founded by Aeneas’ son Ascanius who found 12 puppies there and named the place Tus-Cana – deriving from the word cana which is similar to the Roman word for dog, canis (cane in Italian).

The FREE National Archaeological Museum of Tuscania displays an amazing collection of Etruscan artifacts unearthed in the vicinity.

From the Etruscan maritime trade center, Tuscania later came under the Roman orbit as Rome expanded and conquered the Etruscan city states one by one. During the Middle Ages, Tuscania became one of the first bishopric sees in Italy.

Must see in Tuscania are the remarkable Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Maggiore,  and the 8th century Church of San Pietro built in Lombard-Romanesque style that dominates the town from the top of the sacred Saint Peter Hill.
