La Befana

While in most Christmas traditions Santa Clause (or St Nick) brings toys to children on Christmas Eve,  in Italy there is Befana – the Good witch who flies on her broom bringing toys and treats to children on Eve of Epiphany.

LIVING NATIVITIES

.

One of the many unique Italian Christmas traditions are the Living Nativities, where entire towns (or special places) are transformed into a historical setting that takes you back in time reenacting either Biblical times, or Medieval Times.

In the video below, the town of Canale Monterano transforms the evocative Medieval ghost town of Monterano into a Medieval wonderland complete with the  Nativity – played by real human Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus (usually they are an actual family, each year a different family with a newborn is chosen to represent Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus).
